Recall of pool drain covers could mean holiday pool closings

Washington (CNN) -- A government agency is advising thousands of public swimming pools around the United States that they should not open this Memorial Day weekend because of concerns over potentially deadly drain covers.

Thursday May 26, 2011, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with several manufacturers of pool and spa drain covers, announced a recall of approximately 1 million dangerous drain covers found in the marketplace. (See the link below).

STAMFORD -- A pool company president expressed remorse Wednesday in state Superior Court as he pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of criminally negligent homicide stemming from the 2007 drowning death of a 6-year-old Greenwich boy.

In December 2008, the Virginia Graeme Baker Act took effect. It's named after a 7-year old girl killed by a pool drain. The act requires anti-entrapment, domed shaped drain covers instead of the old flat ones - which can be dangerous.
